This new managed switch stands out for its integration of VxLAN, the evolution of the VLAN network segmentation standard. VxLAN enables the deployment of larger and more flexible segmentation architectures using a 24-bit ID to create up to 16 million isolated logical networks across Layer 3 subnets, thus accommodating the growing scale of virtualized cloud environments.
Furthermore, the D-Link DXS-5000-54S/SI is an Open Networking switch, as its compatibility with SDN and ONIE allows it to install third-party operating systems for integration into data center or virtualization platforms developed with custom software. The ONIE system is pre-loaded, as is D-Link's own operating system. It also supports the OpenFlow v1.3 protocol, enabling the switch to be controlled by a wide variety of OpenFlow controllers.

D-Link Iberia delivered a technical training session on network architectures for Data Centers to coincide with the launch of this switch; the webinar is available at https://youtu.be/W3hE08jH0Ik
