“We are very satisfied with the new Transmode network. In addition to its first-class technological features, the Transmode solution provides us with the best value network design,” stated Jordi Bosch, Secretary of Telecommunications and Information Society of the Government of Catalonia. “Transmode is the only provider that offered us a ROADM-based solution that met our technical requirements and fit within our budget. Since the network went live, we have had no installation problems, nor any instances of breakdowns or failures. In fact, the new intelligence incorporated into the Transmode network has helped us locate external problems more quickly and provide our customers with better services.”
The new network initially provides the Government of Catalonia with 40 channels, with the potential to easily expand to 80 channels in the future. The main difference between Transmode’s WDM solution and the competition lies in its network management tools. These technologies allow the Generalitat to create customer portals showcasing all its services and displaying data related to service level agreement compliance. The network transports Ethernet over WDM using dual 10G Ethernet transponders for 10G Ethernet transport and nine GbE service multiplexers for Gigabit Ethernet transport and aggregation within 10G.
Optical flexibility is becoming increasingly important as network capacity grows, driven by the demand for high-speed broadband from both private and commercial users.
The ability to remotely reconfigure optical channels within the network allows the Generalitat to reduce service activation costs and times, thereby increasing service speeds, enhancing its competitiveness in the sector, and positively impacting the operator's profits.
“This installation in Catalonia is an excellent example of how the best metropolitan and regional networks need to evolve to support the rapid growth in broadband demand generated by mobile data, Triple Play services, and commercial Ethernet services,” said Björn Andersson, Vice President of Sales at Transmode. “Transmode helped the Catalan government design a flexible network capable of absorbing any new demand and traffic patterns, as well as bringing high-capacity broadband to areas that are currently less commercially viable, through the rural broadband stimulus program.
This deployment of a dynamic network with all the necessary management tools is a significant step and demonstrates how Transmode is efficiently addressing the growing ROADM technology segment within the metropolitan optical sector.”
