The ML520G72's 500 mW output power facilitates the design of high-brightness LED-based projectors and can provide a luminous flux of up to 60 lm. Currently, LED-based projectors typically offer only 10 lm.

Furthermore, the ML520G72 offers an electrical power-to-optical conversion efficiency of 32% at 500 mW and a case temperature of 25°C. This helps reduce power consumption and thus extend battery life.

In the temperature range of -5 to 40°C, the ML520G72 can produce up to 500 mW of continuous wave (CW) power. The device is also capable of delivering 600 mW of pulsed laser light at 50°C when operated with a maximum duty cycle of 25% at frequencies of at least 50 Hz.

For CW operation at 25°C, the threshold current is 170 mA. The operating current at 500 mW/2.3 V is 680 mA. The red laser diode is integrated into a standard 5.6 mm CAN package.
