“The Gigabit Ethernet Smart SFP™ OAM demarcation switch that Alcatel-Lucent is developing in collaboration with Aim Valley expands our 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) solution offering,” said Sam Bucci, vice president and general manager of Alcatel-Lucent’s Terrestrial Optical Product Unit. “The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS with Smart SFP™ provides customers with service visibility at the network edge demarcation in applications such as mobile backhaul, business Ethernet, and wholesale carrier, and is essential for launching fast, revenue-generating service SLAs.”.

Smart SFP™ offers instant support for Ethernet over the first mile (EFM). On top of IEEE 802.3ah EFM OAM Link, Smart SFP™ provides Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) for end-to-end IEEE 802.1ag OAM service and Y.1731 performance management.

By incorporating standards-compliant intelligence into the SFP at wire-speed Gigabit Ethernet with low latency, the Smart SFP™ serves a wide range of transceivers. Smart SFP™ variations include dual-fiber, single-fiber BiDi, single-wavelength fiber, and bidirectional single-fiber, as well as CWDM in both dual-fiber and single-fiber configurations. The Smart SFP™ can support Gigabit Ethernet up to 80 km over an industrial temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

OE Solutions and AimValley announced their collaboration agreement for next-generation optical transceivers in December 2011. The Smart SFP™ OAM for Gigabit Ethernet is the first product in the Smart SFP™ family.
