The arrays achieve data transmission speeds of 40 Gbps over distances of up to 4 km and consume only 0.78 W per cable end. Because the overall energy consumption of the data center is reduced, additional ports can be deployed, resulting in more connectivity options and overall cost savings.

“Molex continues to lead the development of innovative interconnect technologies. Our AOC QSFP+ assemblies are yet another example of how we can combine multiple solutions into a single product. They meet our customers’ high-density demands while combining high data integrity with low power consumption,” said Tom Marrapode, Director of Fiber Optic Product Marketing at Molex. He added, “Furthermore, the optical links available for Molex AOC QSFP+ support multiple optical connectors within the optical cable, providing a unique opportunity to support a structured cabling system at the user’s premises. This unique feature significantly increases the flexibility of using and installing AOC QSFP+ to cover distances exceeding 100 meters.”.

The high performance of Molex's AOC QSFP+ assemblies is complemented by CMOS photonic technology, which integrates most of the transceiver functionality onto a single chip; thus offering a low-cost cable that provides a reliable, long-range solution.

Equipped with four bidirectional optical data links at each end, each operating at a data rate between 1.0 and 10.3125 Gbps, Molex AOC QSFP+ arrays support numerous protocols, including InfiniBand* single (SDR), double (DDR), and quad (QDR) data rates, Ethernet (10 and 40 Gbps), Fibre Channel (8 and 10 Gbps), and SAS (6 Gbps). In addition to QDR products, Molex plans to launch next-generation AOC InfiniBand products with FDR (Fourteen Data Rate) in Q3 2011, based on Silicon Photonics' low-power 56 Gbps optical engine technology.
To further expand its range of active optical connectivity products, Molex acquired in January 2011 the AOC business of Luxtera, a world leader in silicon photonics, which transferred all aspects of its current and potential AOC business to Molex, including QSFP+ customers and products for InfiniBand and 40 Gbps Ethernet.
