Thanks to the use of the 2-wire serial interface defined in the MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) specification SFF-8472, the transceiver provides real-time temperature information, as well as LED bias current, average LED output power, and average input power at the receiver. The interface also has the capability to monitor signal loss at the receiver.
The HFBR-57E5APZ provides a standard LC connector on the optical interface to facilitate fiber optic cable connection. On the electrical interface, support for fully operational controlled connection activates EMI shielding before sequentially making ground, power, and signal connections. This allows for reliable installation or removal of any MSA-compliant SFP port without system shutdown.
The transmit unit converts the low-voltage differential logic (LVPECL) input signals into an analog control current for the integrated 1310nm InGaAs LED. The diagnostic interface monitors the LED's drive current to allow inference of the transmitter's light output power.

The receiver employs an InGaAs PIN photodiode with amplifier and pulse-shaping circuitry to generate a differential LVPECL output. The built-in signal loss detection circuit provides an active-high 3.3V TTL link failure indicator, as described in SFF-8074i.
