Avago Technologies QSFP transceiver for 40Gbps Ethernet in short-range multi-way communication and interconnection applications

Avago Technologies announces a new four-channel pluggable parallel QSFP optical transceiver module for 40 Gigabit Ethernet applications.
This latest addition to Avago's growing QSFP transceiver portfolio is a high-performance module compliant with the IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE SR4 specification. This transceiver provides a solution for multi-way data interconnect and communication applications by integrating four independent 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) data lanes in each direction to deliver a combined bandwidth of 40Gbps. In addition to 40Gbps Ethernet interconnects, this transceiver can be used in switches for data/telecom communications and router connections, as well as in data aggregation and backplane applications.

With the need for high bandwidth and density in many of today's high-performance computing and data center applications, the limitations imposed by the bandwidth, power, and size requirements of copper interconnects are reaching their limits and rapidly becoming ineffective. As a result, system designers are transitioning to optical interconnects, which can handle much higher bandwidths for greater reach while consuming less power, offering better EMI response and more flexible cable management than copper-based interconnect solutions.

This new QSFP transceiver module incorporates Avago's integrated circuit and VCSEL technology. With data transmission speeds of 10Gbps up to 100 meters using OM3 fiber, the Avago QSFP module is designed to operate over multimode fiber systems using an 850nm waveform. The electrical interface uses a 38-pin edge connector, while the optical interface uses an 8- or 12-fiber MTP® (MPO) connector.

Avago's QSFP transceiver module also provides electro-optical performance to enable the optimal jitter performance required by high-speed computing, server clusters, InfiniBand and Ethernet switching, and core routers. Furthermore, this transceiver is hot-pluggable for easy installation and maintenance and is backward compatible with 5 and 2.5 Gbps per channel applications.
