The agreement strengthens the existing relationship between the two institutions and aims to promote the deployment of broadband telecommunications networks in rural areas, where local operators have a presence, and to drive societal progress through technology in these regions. This will help address a significant challenge: bridging the digital divide between regions and combating the depopulation of towns and small and medium-sized cities by providing them with the infrastructure necessary to remain competitive.
Balenciaga stressed that "it is essential to work to close the digital divide between territories and thus improve the quality of life of citizens in smaller towns, preventing the migration of their residents.".
For his part, García Vidal affirmed that this agreement “reaffirms the long-standing relationship between the local telecommunications operator and telecommunications engineers, who have been key to the expansion of broadband networks in thousands of towns, opening up opportunities for progress, because today, without connectivity, there is no competitiveness.” Furthermore, it will strengthen the relationship between the two institutions to “prevent any town from being left behind and becoming a digital desert” and to address future technological challenges such as the Internet of Things (IoT) with massive machine-to-machine (M2M) connections, and 5G.
Regarding the content of the agreement, the development of new networks or expansions of existing ones will be promoted under quality criteria, avoiding professional intrusion and guaranteeing compliance with current legislation in a free competition environment.
In this regard, the COIT will carry out the visa and verification of the telecommunications network deployment projects of the local telecommunications operators, who have been implementing ultra-fast networks in Spanish territory using fiber optics since 2007.
Furthermore, both entities will collaborate in the training field in order to enhance knowledge in a sector that is constantly evolving technically and also in regulations, as well as in the dissemination of the technological events that they hold periodically, such as congresses or fairs, and which are a reference for the telecommunications sector.
