Both companies are actively contributing to 5G standardization, in accordance with the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). This joint effort will develop a standards-compliant pre-commercial platform for the new 5G radio communications technology, starting in 2018. The ultimate goal is to deploy a Nokia 5G network combined with a MediaTek 5G system-on-a-chip (SoC) to bring new devices to market faster and usher in the next wave of mobile innovation made possible by 5G.
“Further advancements in 5G require strategic collaboration to unite future connected devices with a network equipped to deliver the full potential of 5G,” said Kevin Jou, senior corporate vice president and Chief Technology Officer of MediaTek. “Working with Nokia, we are providing mobile operators with the end-to-end solutions they need to accelerate 5G adoption and ensure a cohesive and fully functional experience across devices and the network.”
Nokia and MediaTek will work to ensure that all aspects of the network and chipset within devices are tightly integrated, delivering the promise of 5G to consumers and the industry. MediaTek's chipset will be optimized around the modem, radio, data processing, and applications such as multimedia that can benefit from 5G performance.
“Our joint effort toward 5G, the next frontier in communications technology, is the latest example of the close collaboration we have established with MediaTek over the past few years,” said Harold Graham, head of Nokia’s 5G Business Line. “Together with MediaTek, we will be faster at connecting people and things with the next wave of wireless technology.”
