Ursula Ida Lapp was a kind-hearted entrepreneur who, together with her husband Oskar Lapp (1921-1987), created a company that is now the world market leader in connection solutions. The story began in the late 1950s, when Oskar Lapp developed the first rectangular connector for industry and the first industrially manufactured power and control cable. This invention revolutionized connection technology worldwide.
All of this would not have been possible without Ursula Ida Lapp. The Lapp family founded their company, UI Lapp KG, in 1959 (UI for Ursula Ida). Initially, the business was run from their garage in the Vaihingen district of Stuttgart. Oskar Lapp handled sales, while Ursula Ida Lapp took care of the accounting, advertising, and their young children at home. She often went to the freight warehouse to receive the cables as they arrived.
Together they created ÖLFLEX®, the world's first cable brand. They established quality standards that are still applied worldwide in the field of cable production. Due to high demand, the company opened its first factory dedicated to producing ÖLFLEX® cables in 1963.
Following Oskar Lapp's death in 1987, Ursula Ida Lapp assumed leadership of the company along with her sons Siegbert and Andreas. The company continued to expand its international presence, and today LAPP is a leading provider of branded products and solutions in the field of cable and connection technology.
Political, social, and cultural engagement was also among her priorities. In addition to generous donations to organizations in India and institutions in and around Stuttgart, she and her children established the Oskar Lapp Foundation in 1992. This foundation promotes research into cardiovascular diseases. Her commitment to social causes also led her to serve in the regional parliament for four years. Ursula Ida Lapp has received numerous awards for her achievements as a businesswoman and for her social work, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Business Medal of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
LAPP has remained family-owned throughout its history. Two of her three children are part of the company, as are two of her grandchildren, who also work at LAPP. Matthias Lapp (38) is the CEO for the Europe region, which includes South America, Africa, and the Middle East, and Alexander Lapp (36) is responsible for digitalization and e-commerce. "That was our mother's greatest wish: to see her grandchildren take on responsibilities within the company. I'm glad she lived to see it come true. We will continue our company in her spirit," says Chairman of the Supervisory Board Siegbert Lapp.
The funeral was attended by immediate family and close friends due to the current circumstances.
