The contract, valued at €12 million, was awarded through a public tender by the state-owned company ACUAMED (Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas, SA), the main instrument of the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs in the Mediterranean basins.
This project is a benchmark in the water market, as it is a pioneering initiative in Spain due to its characteristics and scale.
The project aims to implement a complex network of environmental indicators that will allow for monitoring the environmental evolution of the Ebro Delta, the conservation status and dynamics of its aquatic ecosystems, the quality of surface water and the aquifer, create a historical data record, provide a tool to support decision-making, and enable the monitoring of environmental actions carried out in this area.
To this end, approximately 60 monitoring points equipped with multi-technology sensors and controllers for acquiring, processing, and transmitting the collected data to the data processing center will be installed and commissioned in the Ebro Delta. The monitoring points will operate automatically, and the collected data will be transmitted to the central station via radio communication systems.
Real-time environmental information:
Based on the data collected by the network of indicators, the solution will provide real-time information on continental hydrological dynamics, such as water levels and flow rates, the evolution of the salt wedge, and pumping stations, as well as coastal dynamics, with information on sea level, littoral currents, and waves. Similarly, the solution will provide information on continental sedimentary dynamics (sediment transport in the river) and coastal dynamics, with data on coastal longitudinal transport, shoreline evolution, and slope changes. The quality of surface water and groundwater, the surface and groundwater recharge rate, and the soil compaction rate will also be analyzed and documented.
To achieve this level of information, the project envisions the integration of a wide range of technologies, including sensors, control equipment, satellite remote sensing, fixed and mobile radar systems, communication networks, monitoring and control software applications (SCADA system), and Business Intelligence, among others.
Data Processing Center and Web Portal:
The project includes the design, development, and commissioning of the Data Processing Center (DPC), where all information transmitted by the control points will be received and managed. For data processing, a centralized automated information system will be implemented to integrate the SCADA system, radar and remote sensing data processing, the data warehouse system, and the maintenance support system.
Relevant information will be published on a web portal for both internal and public use. A GIS system will also be provided to facilitate the publication and consultation of geographic information, and predictive models of environmental evolution will be studied.
The data center for the indicator network will be connected to the centers of the Ebro River Basin Authority and the Catalan Water Agency for the exchange of data related to the Delta area.
The project also includes the supply and commissioning of an analytical laboratory for water quality control.
