Japanese company SOFTBANK TELECOM selects Alcatel-Lucent's 100 Gigabit optical solution to upgrade its backbone network

Alcatel-Lucent has further strengthened its cooperation with SOFTBANK TELECOM Corp. (SBTM), one of Japan's leading operators, to upgrade its backbone network and support the transformation towards fixed-mobile convergence.
Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its next-generation optical network solution, capable of evolving up to 100 gigabits per second (100G), to significantly increase the performance and speed of the service, which will cover the country's three largest cities (Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka), where half of the Japanese population resides.
Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), 100G-ready and equipped with next-generation coherent technology, to significantly increase scalability. As a result, SBTM's backbone network will require fewer regeneration nodes, leading to reduced operating costs and energy consumption. Alcatel-Lucent is currently demonstrating its 100G solution, based on the 1830 PSS system, at Interop Tokyo 2010, where it is supporting live traffic with unprecedented performance and speeds. At 100Gs, a two-hour high-definition movie can be streamed in less than 9 seconds.
Alcatel-Lucent's 100G offering is part of its Converged Backbone Transformation solution, a key component of Alcatel-Lucent's High Leverage Network™ architecture, designed to help operators transform their networks to deliver advanced revenue-generating services in a highly scalable and cost-efficient manner.
