capability-engineering-wAfter understanding the customer's needs and assessing the quality implications of molding very thin sidewalls, GCT asked, "Why use sidewalls?"

GCT offered a modular jack connector without an external wall. The key design challenge was ensuring the eight contacts remained in place, as without a sidewall, they were highly likely to shift during mating. GCT proposed a snap-fit comb that would fit over the contacts of the reflow-soldered SMT connector. The adjustable comb not only keeps the contacts in the correct position for extended product life but also holds them upright for final assembly, securely held in place by the customer's SFP fused cap.

To enable automated SMT assembly, the main connector body was designed to be installed on the underside of a cut PCB with two guide tabs that provide placement assistance and additional strength.

GCT also supplied the connector in tape and reel packaging. No special film was required, as the flat area on the connector was designed to allow for vacuum suction.

GCT supplies the solution commercially at the same price as a standard SMT jack.

In addition, GCT is also providing the special connector cable assembly, designed to prevent EMI/RFI interference and including a special RJ45 offset cable connection, which eliminates any possibility of incorrect connection.

"Here at GCT, we have great confidence in our ability to exceed customer expectations when it comes to designing and building innovative connector solutions," says Steve Turner of GCT. "What's more, our engineers enjoy the challenge of designing something that is not only technically correct but also commercially viable."
