The tests were conducted on Pretium EDGE® Solutions products with Corning® ClearCurve® OM4 bend-insensitive multimode fiber at Corning's Research and Development Center in Sullivan Park, near Corning, NY. The test results supported 40G Ethernet transmission over a distance of 1,250 meters using randomly selected 40G QSFP+ eSR4 transceiver modules, while maintaining a transmission bit error rate (BER) that meets standards of ≤ 10^-12.
“Avago’s EDGE Solutions and 40G QSFP+ eSR4 transceiver module provide data center customers with the ability to extend the distances supported by standard 40G SR4 transceivers and fiber,” said Stuart Hoiness, senior vice president of enterprise networking for Corning Cable Systems. “This maximizes the potential of the OM3/OM4 multimode transmission solution, providing a more cost-effective alternative to supporting longer distances than single-mode fiber deployments and 40G LR4 transceivers.”
The distances specified in the IEEE 802.3ba 40/100G standard are 100 m over OM3 fiber and 150 m over OM4 fiber. When using industry-standard connectivity, the Avago 40G QSFP+ eSR4 module's distance specification is 300 m over OM3 fiber and 400 m over OM4 fiber. Corning's EDGE Solution enables distances of up to 330 m over OM3 fiber and 550 m over OM4 fiber, and is included in the Avago 40G QSFP+ eSR4 transceiver module's product specifications.

How does coherent optics increase data speed? - Modulation and polarization multiply the data capacity in optical networks.
In the early days of optical networks, all optical signals relied on a simple mechanism known as on-off keying (OOK). Simply put, this mechanism works by turning a light on and off to transmit data. OOK is a broader term used to describe...
