This is an innovative experience at the European level, which has involved the creation of a system that allows the collection and recording, in a completely wireless and automatic manner, of all biological and environmental parameters for monitoring the clinical status and evolution of the patient, and integrating them into the nursing care recording systems and digital medical records.
SISENS is a core component of the "Innovative Hospitalization" project, which is itself part of Hospital 2050, a program co-financed 80% by the European Union's ERDF funds. The system, acquired from Televés and Indra through Innovative Public Procurement (IPP), is being successfully implemented in various areas of the Ourense University Hospital Complex (CHUO), including inpatient units, critical care bays, and the emergency department's observation area. Its implementation in the surgical area is also planned for the near future.
A unique comprehensive monitoring receiver.
For the development of the SISENS project, funding was provided for the creation of a new technology consisting of a “smart concentrator,” developed and manufactured by Televés, which is continuously connected to SOFIA2 (http://sofia2.com), Indra’s Internet of Things (IoT) solution. SOFIA2 acts as a central platform that collects and analyzes in real time all the information coming from the devices implanted in the hospital, regardless of their characteristics or manufacturers.
These compact concentrators, designed for easy portability, capture and transfer information on the patient's clinical status and progress to Sofia2, which then integrates it into the nursing care application (GACELA) and the electronic health record system implemented by the Galician Health Service (SERGAS) (IANUS). This data capture and transmission can be performed from various locations, such as hospital wards, operating rooms, emergency departments, ambulances, or even the patient's home.
Wireless Signal Acquisition:
The smart receiver captures signals, via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, radio frequency, and digital broadcasting, from a range of wireless devices used to measure the vital signs of hospitalized patients. These range from basic indicators such as blood pressure, pulse, blood glucose, and temperature, to more complex ones like electrocardiogram, analgesia or sedation levels (ANI Index), and monitoring equipment (cardiac, respiratory, oxygen saturation). This is complemented by wireless alert buttons and fall sensors, as well as sensors that detect variations in mattress pressure, allowing the system to identify if the patient is agitated or immobile for too long, with the consequent risk of pressure ulcers.
Along with this comprehensive range of measurements of the patient's clinical condition, healthcare professionals also have the valuable information received by another piece of ICT equipment: a central environmental sensor, installed in the patient's room, which measures environmental conditions: temperature, noise, humidity, light and atmospheric pressure, as well as managing alerts, integrating the information provided by the different sensors.
Furthermore, the centralization of this information in SOFIA2 generates a Big Data repository of comprehensive clinical information on patients for SERGAS, which can be analyzed in the future for the early detection of patterns that can support the treatment and even the prevention of diseases with the main objective of positively impacting the health of the Galician population.
Foundation
is a non-profit organization that aims to address the quality and excellence needs of the social and healthcare professions in Spain. It was created in 2004 to promote and develop excellence in the management of social and healthcare professionals, both in the public and private sectors. Its mission is to standardize the healthcare sector by developing regulations that add value and guarantee the professional and care activities within the sector.
The Experimental Hospitalization project Hospital 2050, SISENS, developed by Televés and Indra for the Galician Health Service (SERGAS) has won the award, in the ICT application category, from the “Ad Qualitatem” Foundation for the best Quality, Sustainability and Innovation initiative in the Socio-Health Sector.
