Greece, as the current President of the European Union, organized the visit and chose the Covilhã facility (a €90 million investment) as an example of inspiration and technological innovation, given its status as one of the largest and most advanced data centers in the world.

The Greek ambassador to Portugal, Panos Kalogeropoulos, commented before the visit, “We are all eager to see the PT data center and observe the technical innovations being applied to make this center a global pioneer.” He further added that “it is important for PT to operate in Portugal, with such advanced technology, in such an inspiring environment, both architecturally and aesthetically. What is important for one member state is important for all the other states, since together we “can sail further,” as the motto of the Hellenic Presidency of the Union describes.

The Greek Presidency of the Union has four goals under the motto “together we can sail further”; however, the fundamental one is to create smart and sustainable growth. The Union's Innovation Strategy is one of the seven basic points aimed at reducing barriers to innovation and ensuring that Europe is a world leader in science and technology.

Portugal Telecom worked closely with the Greek Presidency of the Union, as well as with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Telecommunications, to organize the visit and ensure that it is seen as an example of technological innovation.
