This will become even more critical with the arrival of LTE, as it requires significantly more capacity. Furthermore, the shift towards small cell architecture will redefine the need for backhaul in mobile networks (small cell capillarity). Improving backhaul capacity could present a unique opportunity for operators to share fixed and mobile investments: specifically, expanding FTTH coverage while meeting backhaul requirements.
In this context, in 2012, IDATE was selected by the FTTH Council Europe and the FTTH Council APAC to analyze key issues related to the use of FTTH for backhauling. Approximately 20 mobile telecommunications companies worldwide were interviewed during this study.

Presenter: Roland Montagne.
