Toshiba 8TB SATA enterprise HDD
Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) announces the availability for volume orders of its upcoming MG series of enterprise-capacity HDDs offering 8TB for mission-critical business servers and shared storage systems.
Toshiba's new 8TB model can help improve the operational efficiency of storage infrastructure by increasing available capacity in the industry-standard 3.5-inch form factor. The drive's high-capacity SATA interface and performance characteristics meet the demands of applications such as software-defined storage infrastructures, public and private cloud deployments, digital archives, and disk-based backup and data protection solutions.
The drive's power management features help optimize operating costs and operating environments during off-peak periods. The 8TB SATA HDD is designed for 24/7 operation and provides a workload transfer rate of 550TB per year [3], with an MTTF rating [4] of 2,000,000 hours. Furthermore, this is Toshiba's first Enterprise Capacity SATA model to support the new industry-standard host-initiated power-off feature, enhancing device manageability.
“Adapting to the rapid growth of data remains a primary focus for IT environments, both in the cloud and on-premises,” says Noriaki Katakura, General Manager of Toshiba Electronics Europe for the HDD Business Unit. “Toshiba’s new 8TB enterprise-grade HDD offers high capacity per spindle. This helps OEMs and cloud service providers (CSPs) deliver enterprise-class storage capacity for mission-critical workloads that need to keep pace with rapid data growth.”.
The recently announced IDC market report [5] identified Toshiba as the fastest-growing vendor in the HDD segment in 2016 compared to 2015, measured by revenue and units shipped. Toshiba's growth was driven by the wide range of innovative HDD models offered across different segments of the primary market. The new 8TB SATA hard drive, part of the MG series, is targeted at enterprise and data center capacity needs.
In February 2017, the cumulative production number of Toshiba Near-Line Enterprise hard drives reached 10,000,000 units. The MG series hard drives, which are Near-Line Enterprise HDDs, are now available for OEMs and system integrators. Typical use cases include tiered storage infrastructure for cloud deployments, virtual desktop interfaces (VDIs), email servers, data protection, public and private cloud storage, software-defined storage solutions, mission-critical server storage (including NAS and SANs), disk-based backup systems (including cloud-scale data protection), data archiving and digital log storage, SMB servers, and storage platforms.
