Immutable storage and backup
Immutable storage and license-free backups are available in DSM 7.2 through WriteOnce shared folders and Immutable Snapshots. Leveraging WORM technology, these features allow organizations to protect their data from malicious attacks, tampering, and accidental deletion by creating an unalterable copy. This capability is crucial for sectors such as healthcare, finance, and government, which must adhere to strict data retention policies.
Full volume fast encryption
Full-volume fast encryption encrypts data at rest, including shared folders, LUNs, and packet data. This feature ensures data privacy and security in the event of a security breach or theft, as the stored data becomes unreadable without the decryption key. It also supports KMIP for simplified and centralized key management.
Full volume encryption provides up to a 48% increase in write performance compared to applying shared folder encryption to all eligible data stored on a volume. Between the two modes, users now have efficient options for protecting specific data or entire file systems against unauthorized access.
Greater performance and efficiency
DSM 7.2 adds support for M.2 NVMe SSD storage volumes on more systems, enabling more flexible use of onboard M.2 NVMe slots. SSD deduplication is improved with the implementation of inline Block Zero elimination, providing up to 25% faster deduplication times by reducing the amount of data that needs to be stored.
Meanwhile, implementing full-system backups in Hyper Backup provides a complete backup option to the cloud, USB devices, and other destinations. With block-level storage technology, initial full-system backups are twice as fast.
More secure and convenient access controls
Adaptive multi-factor authentication is making its way into Synology systems, providing a seamless approach to security by evaluating various contextual factors, such as device, location, time of day, and security and user behavior, to determine if additional verification is needed.
Security measures are further enhanced with the implementation of Automatic Blocking for SMB connections and QuickConnect. This option provides protection against brute-force attacks by blocking IP addresses with repeated failed login attempts. QuickConnect, meanwhile, can globally ban IP addresses, strengthening overall security against potential threats.
Improved management
Active Insight now includes storage capacity forecasting. This new feature helps IT administrators and MSPs anticipate future storage needs by providing information about current storage usage and predicting future capacity requirements.
In addition, DSM system notifications are improved with more flexible notification settings, and support for Microsoft Teams and LINE notifications has been added.
Improvements across the entire ecosystem
DSM 7.2 also includes several important improvements to applications and services, including:
- Hybrid Share: Ensures global file locking to achieve data consistency across locations.
- Container Manager (formerly Docker): Allows you to add and manage multi-container applications from the user interface
- Synology Photos: guarantees an enhanced user experience for albums
- SSO Server: Supports OIDC and SAML protocols
- SSO Client: Supports SAML and CAS protocols
