The integrated EEPROM, combined with the internal voltage reference, four-channel architecture, and precise rail-to-rail output amplifier, allows the MCP4728 DAC to significantly reduce component size and cost in a wide variety of battery-powered and power-constrained applications.
Through the integrated I2C™ serial interface, designers can configure the MCP4728 DAC's input codes, configuration bits, and I2C address bits. This configuration information is stored in the non-volatile EEPROM and is therefore retained when power is removed, making it immediately available again upon power restoration and reconfiguration of the DAC during power-up.
The MCP4728 architecture also allows individual shutdown of each of the four channels, reducing power consumption to as low as 40 nA. This helps designers meet or exceed cost and size requirements while delivering the resolution and low power consumption demanded by today's battery-powered and power-constrained applications. These include consumer devices (media players, digital cameras, and GPS devices); medical; industrial; household appliances; and automotive (LED lighting and alarm/security systems).
The MCP4728 evaluation board (part number MCP4728EV) is available. The MCP4728 DAC is currently offered as a sample and is supplied in a 10-pin MSOP package.
