3GPP Release 14 is enabling this future through the use of FeMBMS (Evolved Media Streaming Multicast Service). As part of the 5G research project, Rohde & Schwarz is investigating large-scale television broadcasts in FeMBMS mode. The use of high-power high-tower (HPHT) transmitters allows broadcasters to distribute video over 5G networks in downlink mode with all the advantages of traditional broadcasting. This provides the high quality levels known for HDTV transmission, low-latency live content, as well as enormous spectrum efficiency and wide coverage. There is no need for a SIM card in the mobile device.

Rohde & Schwarz offers a complete 5G transmission solution for network operators. This solution covers all entities, from content providers to consumers. The R&S Tx9 transmitters provide FeMBMS based on a unique software-based signal processing platform. This pure software-based signal processing platform gives network operators great flexibility and prepares them for future signal processing requirements.

Rohde & Schwarz is launching its new 5G Broadcast Core Network Element, the R&S BSCC Transmission Control and Service Center, which enables Rohde & Schwarz terrestrial transmitters to deliver LTE/5G broadcast content. This element provides the core network functionality necessary for network operators to distribute content via LTE/5G transmission. The main benefit of R&S BSCC is that it reduces the complexity of 3GPP core network entities to meet broadcasters' needs for a seamless LTE/5G broadcast experience. The overall Rohde & Schwarz solution simplifies network parameter configuration. Multiple Rohde & Schwarz FeMBMS transmission sites can be centrally configured within the R&S BSCC core network element.
