In addition to ensuring connector retention and signal integrity, the J-Tek screw-on fixing is also used to interconnect printed circuit boards in innovative configurations where space is very valuable.

Scott Flower, Harwin's Global Product Manager for High Reliability Connectors, commented: “With electronics ubiquitous in harsh environments experiencing high levels of shock and vibration, customers demand fastening solutions that provide the highest levels of reliability. For example, automotive teams, who previously used plastic locks, are now adopting screw fasteners for greater safety. Robotics is another example where repeated connections and disconnections can cause wear on the lock, so screw fasteners are generally preferred.”.

Satellites, especially miniature CubeSats, rely on screw-on fasteners not only to ensure the connection survives harsh operating conditions, but also to save space. According to Flower, “A Datamate customer is using screw-on fasteners to connect four boards in one section of the equipment. The boards become self-contained, and space utilization is maximized, which is always a key consideration in satellite design.”.

Harwin recommends that users tighten Datamate screw clamps to 21 +/- 2 Ncm. This ensures that the devices meet EIA specifications for heavy vibration. Screw clamps are supplied with all Harwin Datamate and Mix-Tek (mixed signal, power, and coaxial) connectors.
