“The direct-connect solution benefits from the density, signal integrity, and high speed of Impact technology, without incurring additional costs or requiring press-fit assembly,” explains Pete Soupir, manager of new product development at Molex. He adds, “The combination of the direct rectangular male connector and the auxiliary card saves space and simplifies component management for manufacturers among our customers. Furthermore, it improves the performance of data, telecommunications, medical, networking, and other high-speed equipment.”.
Molex Impact orthogonal direct connectors offer pin-compatible connection options and between 18 and 72 differential pairs per orthogonal node. The 3-step, 6-pair configurations include a full range of PCB and mating interface options. The system leverages the proven Impact mating interface, which offers the lowest mating force in the backplane motherboard industry, and proprietary pin compatibility technology to provide designers with a flexible solution that allows them to find an optimal balance of mechanical and electrical performance.
Molex's Impact orthogonal direct-connect system, designed to meet the performance requirements of the IEEE 10GBASE-KR standard and OIF (Optical Internetworking Forum) StatEye compliant channels, ensures full compliance. Thanks to the reduced size of the line cards and the shorter signal paths from the switch module, the simple 2.15 mm x 1.35 mm grid on both the Impact system's backplane and auxiliary board simplifies PCB routing and reduces costs.
“Customers gain additional electrical headroom in their high-performance systems to more effectively achieve speeds exceeding 25 Gbps and reduce the chances of erroneous bit rates,” says Pete Soupir, adding, “The orthogonal direct-attach architecture, consisting of differential pairs and a wide coupling edge, improves airflow and transmits a more stable signal across all high-speed channels compared to backplane connections with conventional routing.”.
Molex's Impact 100W orthogonal direct connection system is backward compatible with previous Impact midplane daughterboard orthogonal connection versions.
