Fiber at Home 1To achieve this, and in order to optimize the expenses, time, and costs involved in building and operating the fiber optic network, ewl and Swisscom are utilizing both companies' existing cable infrastructure. Swisscom is responsible for laying cables between the city's inner districts, while ewl handles the final distribution segment to individual apartments and properties.

Property owners are connected to the new high-speed network free of charge. For individual users, the benefits of having FTTH connections in their apartments include high-definition (HD) television, time-shifting, and fast internet access, currently at speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. The FTTH network is also open. This means that customers are free to choose from the services offered by different service providers – Plus, Mygate, and others.

For this future-oriented project, ewl is using special fiber optic cables and Datwyler wall sockets in the buildings. By the summer of 2011, the company DE Altdorf will have already supplied more than 500 kilometers of FTTH cable for residential use and around 12,000 wall sockets.

For the home wiring, ewl decided to use the thinnest possible FTTH cable with a flame-retardant yellow sheath and four fixed fibers, each with a maximum diameter of 0.6 mm. In terms of design, the FTTH wall socket needed to match the existing installations, be as flat as possible, and be approved by Swisscom. In addition to a label window, dust caps, and laser-shielded connectors, prefabricated fiber optic couplings were required, designed with joint protection against curling and shrinkage, as well as a generously sized, integrated fiber tray. Furthermore, the wall socket had to ensure ease of handling during installation.

A decision was made in favor of Datwyler because this long-time ewl provider had the ability to supply the right FTTH products with the required price and quality.

Another decisive factor was the company's extensive know-how in fiber optics, experience gained in other FTTH projects, and the fact that the Altdorf team had the necessary flexibility and resources available to supply the required quantity at the desired time.

To ensure everything ran smoothly, ewl entrusted all logistics operations to Kablan AG, a company based in Ostermundigen. Working with this distribution and logistics specialist means ewl is able to save money on both warehousing
and ensuring the availability of the required materials.

The products were installed by ewl's installation partners, Cablex AG and Network 41 AG, who received the required materials directly from Kablan. The installers spliced the fiber optic cables and ran them into the building, along with the fibers of the respective home FTTH cable, each into a central housing at the Building Entry Point (BEP). The home cables were then run to the individual apartments via riser cables. There, the installers connected two of the four fibers (type G.657.A) at the wall outlet on the prefabricated connectors and inserted them into the LC/APC Duplex connector. Tenants and owners could then proceed with the direct connection of the equipment provided by the service provider.

Fiber at Home 2The specific design of Datwyler cables and wall sockets allows installation companies to carry out installations quickly. For example, it is relatively easy to run a domestic FTTH cable, with an outer diameter of only 2.8 millimeters, through riser conduits that, in most cases, are already occupied by other cables.

Thanks to excellent collaboration between all parties involved, ewl has successfully completed approximately 12,000 FTTH connections in the Tribschen and Maihof districts. During 2012, work will focus on the Würzenbach and Hirschengraben districts. By the end of 2014, all 42,500 users will be connected to the FTTH network.
