Optical network data rates are surpassing new limits in transmission speeds due to the wavelength and fiber density achieved through dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), high-fiber-count cables, and complex point-to-multipoint and multi-fiber push-on (MPO) architectures. It is more important than ever for network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) and network operators to add remote network intelligence to ensure high quality of service (QoS), near-100% uptime, and security. To achieve this, they must also scale fiber network deployment, accelerate construction, generate service revenue, and manage an ever-increasing maintenance workload. Automated, remote intelligence enables the ability to scale high-quality standards and speeds without adding the corresponding expense and workload.

VIAVI has presented new solutions:

- A new patented flash fiber monitoring feature for the software ONMSi and SmartOTU This feature allows operators to detect and locate flash dimming, which causes network path flutter and bursty network failures. It is 100 to 300 times faster than traditional monitoring, with performance that enables flash dimming detection in one-tenth of a second.

The new Micro and Nano iOTDR cards enable telecommunications equipment manufacturers to integrate time-domain optical reflectometer (OTDR) technology into their devices, with low power consumption and a small footprint. The cards' advanced software library offers operators the most diverse range of use cases in the industry through an integrated iOTDR solution. The cards support network engineers and their efforts for operators with a range of applications including fiber characterization, fiber monitoring, intrusion detection for secure outlets, fault demarcation, Raman-amplified link testing, and fiber degradation monitoring for preventative maintenance.

New fiber network analytics using the NITRO BI Fiber Insight platform for ONMSi automate fiber optic diagnostics to proactively eliminate risks and create a prioritized network performance improvement action plan. All fibers can be categorized by cable, customer, and network location down to the root cause of the failure, transforming mountains of raw data into actionable insights.

In addition to the ONMSi fiber remote testing system, VIAVI offers two types of optical test heads that work in conjunction with ONMSi and NITRO software to enable customers to optimize flexible OTDR capabilities, rack space, and price: the OTU-8000 and OTU-5000. The system can be used for PON construction and service delivery, continuous monitoring, infrastructure monitoring, and network security applications.
