Multimode fiber is typically installed inside buildings or between nearby buildings and provides a single data channel. The CWDM/X Multimode multiplexer allows up to eight data channels of different wavelengths to be transmitted over multimode fiber.
"Now, multimode fiber can support higher bandwidth applications at a much lower cost than installing new single-mode fiber," said Steve Mood, CTO of Omnitron. "The Multimode CWDM/X Multiplexer adds new data channels to existing multimode fiber installed in corporate LANs, campus networks, and data centers, where regulatory or environmental constraints make replacing the existing fiber very expensive or impossible.".
Multimode CWDM/X multiplexers are protocol- and speed-transparent, allowing Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SDH/SONET, and other services up to 10 Gbps per channel to be transported over the same fiber connection. The modules support the ITU-T G.694.2 standard for CWDM wavelengths from 1470nm to 1610nm in 20nm increments.
This new equipment can be installed on our iConverter Multi-Service Platform, and in the same iConverter chassis as managed media converters, fiber transponders, and Carrier Ethernet demarcation equipment. This flexible architecture enables Ethernet and TDM connectivity between existing equipment and CWDM multiplexers without requiring network upgrades.
Multimode CWDM/X Multiplexers are passive devices that do not require external power, and can be managed with management software such as Omnitron's SNMP NetOutlook® by adding a management module to the iConverter chassis.
