The agreement was signed by José M. Sanz, Rector of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM); Ángeles Delgado, General Manager of Fujitsu; and María Artola, General Manager of the UAM Foundation. The Chair will be directed by Fernando Martín García, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the UAM, and its deputy director will be Alberto Luna Fernández, Director of the UAM's Center for Scientific Computing, both of whom also attended the signing ceremony.
The Sponsored Chairs program, one of the most innovative currently offered by the UAM, will provide a framework to encourage research on scientific computing and big data, with activities aimed at improving the operation of the UAM's Center for Scientific Computing. Furthermore, the Chair will place special emphasis on training, carrying out postgraduate teaching activities related to scientific computing and big data, both in doctoral programs and in Master's degrees and expert or specialization diplomas. Specifically, Fujitsu will participate in the activities of the Erasmus Mundus Master's program in theoretical chemistry and computational modeling, which, under the coordination of the UAM, is offered at numerous Spanish universities, and in the doctoral program of the same name. Finally, other communication and internship activities will be carried out at the company for students to facilitate their professional integration.
José María Sanz, Rector of the UAM, thanked Fujitsu after the signing of the Agreement for the trust placed in the research groups of the Autonomous University of Madrid: "This is an agreement from which we will all benefit."
For her part, Ángeles Delgado, General Manager of Fujitsu, emphasized that "Fujitsu has always been committed, throughout our 40 years in Spain, to promoting teaching, research, development, and innovation in the field of Information Technology. Today is a great day for us, as the signing of this agreement brings us even closer to this distinguished University, which demonstrates its commitment to scientific computing and big data, something that will undoubtedly drive important research with applications in the business world. At Fujitsu, we believe that we must give back to society some of what it gives us, and the creation of this university chair is one of the best ways we can contribute to increasing people's well-being by supporting our future scientists, since the development of our country lies with them."
María Artola, General Director of FUAM, highlighted the role that the Foundation she directs plays in ensuring that "the knowledge generated within the University can reach the whole of society through collaboration with public and private institutions."
