"The laying of a cable that will allow bidirectional communication between the people of Cuba and the people of Venezuela, and all the peoples of the world, has begun," commented Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolás Maduro at the start of the cable's construction, which will reach Jamaica and other Caribbean countries.

"With this, we are carrying out an act of historical justice because dozens of submarine cables pass around Cuba, but due to the criminal blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States, we have been prevented from accessing the connection," commented the Cuban ambassador in Caracas, Rogelio Polanco.

The cable, brought from France, will reach the Cuban coast in mid-February.

Cuban authorities recently stated that the project will increase the island's connectivity capacity by 3,000 times.
