The 5G network has been installed at Siemens' Automotive Showroom and Test Center in Nuremberg. This center showcases automated guided vehicles (AGVs), primarily used in the automotive industry. It also develops, tests, and presents new manufacturing options and methods before they are implemented at customer sites. This allows Siemens customers, such as AGV manufacturers, to see the products interacting in real-world situations.
The automotive showroom and test center allow Siemens and Qualcomm to test all different technologies on a standalone 5G network under real-world operating conditions and offer solutions for future industrial applications. Qualcomm Technologies installed the 5G test system, including infrastructure and end devices, in less than three weeks. Siemens provided the existing industrial setup, including SIMATIC control systems and IoT devices.
The German Federal Network Agency has reserved a total bandwidth of 100 MHz in the 3.7 GHz to 3.8 GHz band for use at local industrial sites. This allows German companies to lease a portion of this bandwidth annually and use it exclusively at their own operating sites on a private 5G network, while ensuring optimal data protection. Siemens is using this principle to evaluate and test industrial protocols such as OPC UA and PROFINET at its automotive showroom and test center, in conjunction with wireless communication via 5G.
