The purpose of the Fund is to contribute to the achievement of the European Gigabit Society's objectives. The CEBF will invest in underserved areas where significant opportunities for profitability exist. The countries where the CEBF will invest are the EU Member States, as well as Norway and Iceland.
The Rural Network ("RuNe") project is an example of such an investment opportunity. RuNe aims to provide high-quality connectivity to citizens and SMEs located in rural areas of the Republic of Slovenia and the Croatian counties of Primorsko-Goranska and Istarska.
The CEBF is a private equity fund that first closed in June 2018 with €420 million to invest in greenfield broadband infrastructure projects in underserved areas of Europe. The CEBF is managed by an independent investment fund manager, Cube Infrastructure Managers in Luxembourg, and is backed by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), Germany's KfW Bankengruppe, Italy's Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), and France's Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC), along with other European private investors.
