Once completed, the SACS will mark a major milestone in the development of the globally relevant project as it will interconnect with the Monet cable system (which connects the United States and Brazil) and with the West African Cable System (WACS).
The SACS system is a 6,165 km long cable with a data transmission capacity of 40 Tbps (terabits per second) and four fiber pairs that will connect Angola and Brazil, thus linking Africa and the Americas. Each fiber pair is capable of transmitting 100 wavelengths with a bandwidth of 100 gigabits per second. Angola Cables is one of the 12 members of the consortium that manages WACS (and one of its largest shareholders), a cable system that provides services to providers and operators in Angola and Sub-Saharan Africa across 11 countries. With its 14,530 km of cable running from Yzerfontein (South Africa) to London (United Kingdom), the WACS has four fiber pairs and includes 14 landing points, 12 of which are located along the west coast of Africa (including Cape Verde and the Canary Islands) and two in Europe (Portugal and England).
With a successfully completed underwater survey, Angola Cables ensures that the cable will be deployed along the most optimal route, avoiding hazardous areas. This is essential for ensuring the future of the SACS (Southern Subsea Cable System). The completion of the underwater survey means that the final manufacturing process can proceed, and any minor adjustments to the route and/or cable itself can be made based on the survey results. With the cable being laid near the shore (Pre-Laid Shore End or PLSE), construction of the SACS is now underway. For this specific aspect of the cable system, Angola Cables commissioned NEC Japan and contracted Ocean Specialists, Inc. (OSI) to oversee the construction process and guarantee the highest quality standards.
“We have worked closely with our partners and suppliers to ensure that the SACS system network delivers the highest possible value to our customers,” said Antonio Nunes, CEO of Angola Cables. “As part of our global connectivity strategy, SACS will offer the first direct, high-capacity, southbound transatlantic connection.”
SACS will be ready by mid-2018
"These key milestones demonstrate that the SACS cable is nearing completion, and Angola Cables continues to promote the provision of services via SACS by mid-2018. Meanwhile, customers are increasingly relying on the southern transatlantic route for diversification and security reasons. SACS, in conjunction with Monet and the existing WACS cable system, delivers unprecedented value, for which we are experiencing high market demand," added Artur Mendes, General Commercial Director for Angola Cables.
