The results of the project translate into real-world applications in both the traditional and digital economies.

The project has developed and tested concrete applications that illustrate its impact. First and foremost, it is worth noting the creation of real-time COVID risk maps, in collaboration with Orange and Acuratio, which allow authorities to make quick and accurate decisions in the event of future health crises.

On the other hand, Inmarepro and Acuratio have optimized energy consumption in industry by connecting steam pumps in four industrial plants to improve energy efficiency without compromising data privacy and while helping to protect the environment. Inmarepro is developing a commercial offering for its clients based on the results and technology transferred through MLEDGE.

Key innovations of the project

Key achievements of the project include:

• FedQV, a new federation algorithm inspired by the political theory of “quadratic voting”, significantly improves current methods for combining local machine learning models.

• PriPrune, a system that protects data privacy while optimizing federated learning models.

• The integration of these innovations into a commercial federated learning platform, developed by the Spanish company Acuratio, as a clear example of technology transfer from the laboratory to Spanish industry.

“Thanks to MLEDGE, we have been able to bring the latest research results directly to companies and customers, demonstrating that it is possible to combine efficiency, security and privacy in real time,” Nikolaos Laoutaris points out.

MLEDGE contributes to a more secure data economy, where sensitive information from individuals and companies can be reliably used to train artificial intelligence models, while simultaneously optimizing energy consumption. The project leaves a tangible legacy in the form of systems that can help manage health crises, tools that optimize industrial processes, and methodologies that accelerate the adoption of federated learning in Spain. Furthermore, “the collaborations established with companies like Orange, Acuratio, and Inmarepro continue to develop and explore new applications in smart cities, digital health, and urban mobility,” adds Laoutaris.

MLEDGE has been funded by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and with funds from the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
