The goal is to address the needs of connected mobility and road safety through applications such as connected autonomous driving, ubiquitous access to services, and integration into smart cities and transportation systems.
The new generation of 5G mobile networks and the ongoing evolution of the LTE standard, which includes cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communication, are shifting the focus of information and communication technology (ICT) toward the Internet of Things and the digitalization of industries.
The next generation of mobile networks will represent an evolution of current networks. They are expected to handle much larger volumes of data, enable the connection of a greater number of devices, significantly reduce latency, and offer new levels of reliability. Among other examples, the 5G standard provides better support for communications essential for safer driving, as well as for vehicle-to-everything communications and connected mobility solutions.
These new solutions will create new technological and business opportunities for both the automotive and ICT sectors, and the association's members will collaborate closely to realize their full potential. The association will address key technical and regulatory issues, leveraging the next generation of mobile networks and integrating vehicle platforms with connectivity, interconnection, and computing solutions. The association's main activities will include:
Defining and harmonizing use cases, technical requirements, and implementation strategies;
supporting standardization and regulatory bodies, as well as certification and approval processes;
addressing vehicle-to-everything communication technology requirements, such as wireless connectivity, security, privacy, authentication, distributed cloud architectures, and more;
and managing joint innovation and development projects leading to integrated solutions, interoperability testing, large-scale pilot projects, and trial deployments.
The 5G Automotive Association is a global association and is open to more members from the automotive, ICT, and broader automotive ecosystem and value chain sectors, as well as road transport networks. Several companies have already expressed their strong support for the 5GAA and stated their intention to join in the near future.
The 5G standard offers enhanced support for communications essential for safer driving, as well as for vehicle-to-everything communications and connected mobility solutions.
