Synology has launched BeeDrive, a compact data center that backs up personal files and photos from your computer, phone, and tablet simultaneously. In less than three minutes of setup, any PC user can start protecting their files with BeeDrive at blazing-fast local transfer speeds, while ensuring complete data privacy and ownership. “Today, we all generate an unprecedented amount of data across multiple personal devices,” says Clara Sauri, Product Manager for Synology in Spain and Portugal. “Internet loading speeds haven’t been able to keep up with the explosive growth of personal data, so storing all our files in the cloud is becoming increasingly slow and expensive. That’s why Synology wants to offer a local and private alternative,” she adds.
“With BeeDrive, we hope to bring Synology’s expertise in backup technologies to a wider range of users. Many of them are familiar with using computers, but lack the time or networking knowledge to host a server that runs continuously solely for backup purposes,” Clara notes.
Guaranteed local backups for computers and mobile devices.
Once connected to a computer, users can select which folders they want to protect. BeeDrive automatically backs up all changes to those folders in real time, providing a better recovery point objective (RPO) than hourly scheduled backups. Backup files are stored in the same format as on the computer. In the event of a computer failure, users can simply connect the solution to another computer and access their files immediately, without having to install any software or go through a time-consuming recovery process.
BeeDrive also backs up photos and videos from iOS and Android devices over Wi-Fi, so phones and tablets are protected too. Simply ensure your computer and mobile devices are on the same network and scan a QR code to start the backup process and free up space on your phone.
Furthermore, the solution overcomes the bandwidth limits imposed by internet or cloud service providers. Ultimately, it can be 11 times faster than backing up large files to the cloud from a computer and six times faster than doing so from mobile devices.
BeeDrop and two-way synchronization to boost productivity.
For field staff and other professionals who take many photos on their phones and need to use them on a computer when they return to the office, the BeeDrop feature allows them to wirelessly send content generated by mobile devices from iOS and Android devices to BeeDrive. The files are immediately accessible on the computer, without needing to upload them to the cloud and then download them.
When switching between work and home computers, BeeDrive can help synchronize files on each computer as soon as it connects, ensuring that all files are always up-to-date on the computer you're working on while keeping a second copy.
“Collecting files generated from all our personal devices is just the first step,” says Clara Sauri. “In the future, we hope to leverage a computer’s abundant computing resources to help users extract more value from the data itself, for example, through automatic categorization. BeeDrive is now available in 1TB and 2TB capacity options for Windows, iOS, and Android through Synology partners and distributors worldwide. macOS compatibility is planned.
