Built on a common architecture, both products feature 10 platters spinning at 7200 rpm in a standard 3.5-inch helium-filled housing that take advantage of Toshiba's innovative flow-controlled microwave-assisted magnetic recording (FC-MAMR™) technology.

Designed for increased performance and 24/7 reliability, the Mx11 family features a 1 GiB buffer for a nominal workload[4] of 550 TB per year, with an MTTF/MTBF of 2.5 million hours and an AFR of 0.35%.

The MG11 CMR hard drive series enables customers providing cloud services, data centers, and enterprise storage to quickly scale storage density within their existing infrastructure. Built with a 1GiB buffer, the new 24TB HDD is faster than its predecessor, with a maximum sustained transfer rate of 295MiB/s, approximately 9% higher.

With a choice of 6 Gbps SATA or 12 Gbps SAS interfaces, the MG11 series is perfectly suited to any data center, supporting data storage, backup, online archiving, and video surveillance applications. For added security, the MG11 is also available with Instant Erase (SIE) and Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) options.

The MA11 series, meanwhile, achieves 2.8TB per drive using SMR technology. Host-managed SMR increases drive capacity by overlapping physical disk tracks during write operations. Data centers with software that can optimize this design will benefit from greater cost efficiency thanks to higher storage densities. The new MA11 series is available in 28TB and 27TB capacities with a 6Gbps SATA interface and SED options for enhanced security.

According to Larry Martinez-Palomo, Vice President and Head of Toshiba's Storage Products Division, "Backed by 50 years of continuous innovation in HDD technology, the Mx11 series offers new levels of capacity and total cost of ownership (TCO) efficiency, enabling customers to optimize operating costs while expanding their data center infrastructure."

Sample shipments of the MG11 Series will begin this September, and those of the MA11 Series will begin in the last quarter of this year.
