By adopting an optical interface, it becomes possible to aggregate and interconnect individual components that form systems, such as SSDs and CPUs, driving the evolution of a "disaggregated computing system" capable of efficiently utilizing resources based on workload. Furthermore, thanks to its high signal integrity, the optical interface is expected to contribute to the implementation of high-performance computing systems operating in demanding environments, such as space.

“KIOXIA’s prototype broadband SSD with an optical interface, when combined with other optical devices and systems in the data center infrastructure, has the potential to revolutionize data centers as we know them today,” explains Axel Störmann, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of KIOXIA Europe GmbH. “The new SSDs will enable the development of future ‘greener’ server environments that will offer not only greater energy efficiency, but also greater storage efficiency, scale, and performance (improved throughput and latency).”.

These achievements were attained as a result of the Next Generation Green Data Center Technology Development project funded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) under the Green Innovation Fund Project: Construction of Next Generation Digital Infrastructure.

This major project is developing cutting-edge technologies, and one of its objectives is to achieve energy savings of over 40% compared to current data centers. As part of the project, KIOXIA is developing broadband SSDs with an optical interface for data storage in next-generation, eco-friendly data centers.
