Among the requirements for 5G mobile broadband are new technologies that deliver over-the-air data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps. To meet these requirements, new over-the-air interfaces are being developed to operate in the 10–100 GHz frequency bands. The 5G Channel Survey Reference Solution combines metrology-grade hardware, software, and expertise to enable customers to rapidly characterize channel behavior in these frequency bands and allow researchers to develop the channel models needed to design and validate alternative over-the-air interfaces.

Researchers can obtain highly accurate absolute delay measurements with system-wide calibrations, precise timing, and synchronization. They will also save time and disk space by utilizing real-time multichannel data processing and correlation of channel impulse response (CIR) data provided by the M9703A high-speed digitizer's FPGAs. Engineers can use the SystemVue system-level simulation and design software platform to calculate channel parameter estimates and perform link-layer simulations and validations of new 5G designs using imported channel models.
The 5G channel survey reference solution also enables:
• Tx/Rx up to 44 GHz with 1 GHz bandwidth for 4 or 8 MIMO channels
• Capture of multiple phase-coherent channels for real-time CIR data processing on FPGAs
• System-level calibration and synchronization for accurate timing and measurements
• Flexibility and scalability to add more channels and tests as the 5G standard evolves
• Customization of waveforms, models for channel parameter extraction, and system integration
