EXTreme Otho PowerT 5a-wThe new EXTreme OrthoPower system uses a dedicated power card to achieve an input and output power of 30.0 A on each line card, resulting in a total of 60.0 A per module thanks to a plate technology.

“Direct power delivery has become an increasingly important factor due to the demand for higher-speed systems and more cost-effective solutions. Designers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are trying to solve the problems caused by limited space and routing constraints on the board, seeking an optimal solution for powering line cards,” says Rich Benson, new product development manager at Molex, adding: “The innovative EXTreme OrthoPower orthogonal connector mounts to a dedicated power board to deliver power directly to each line card.”

Thanks to its market-first, direct-feed orthogonal configuration, the Molex EXTreme OrthoPower system reduces costs by eliminating power routing through an additional orthogonal backplane connector. The EXTreme OrthoPower connector features validated power contacts and a robust guidance system for proper mechanical alignment during mating. Housed in a robust orthogonal package, the EXTreme OrthoPower system is based on other proven Molex power connectors, including the EXTreme LPHPower™ and EXTreme Ten60Power™.

“By reducing the number of components needed to route power, the direct-fed orthogonal architecture incorporates an angle that not only reduces costs but also simplifies design for OEMs that need higher power in a compact package,” concludes Rich Benson.
