To ensure robust connectivity for Ethernet-based subnets and automation devices, the Scalance MUM856-1 supports 5G version 15. The device offers high bandwidths of up to 1000 Mbps downlink and up to 500 Mbps uplink, providing high data rates for data-intensive applications such as remote firmware updates. Thanks to IPv6 support, the device can also be deployed on modern communication networks. Several security features are included to monitor data traffic and protect it against unauthorized access, such as an integrated firewall, authentication of communication devices, and encryption of data transmission via VPN. If a 5G network is unavailable, the device automatically switches to 4G or 3G networks. The initial release version of the router has an EU radio license; subsequent versions with different licenses are in development. With the Sinema Remote Connect management platform for VPN connections, users can easily and securely access remote plants or machines, even if they are integrated into other networks. The software also offers easy device management and auto-configuration.
In addition to connectivity with public networks, the Scalance MUM856-1 also supports integration into local private 5G campus networks. Siemens is testing this use case in its own automotive showroom and test center on a standalone 5G test network prototype, which is based on Siemens components. The 5G infrastructure used here comprises a 5G core, a distributed unit, and several radio units. Siemens has also built another private 5G infrastructure prototype at its Amberg plant, and its Karlsruhe plant will be equipped shortly. In these systems, Siemens relies exclusively on its own independently developed products and solutions. Furthermore, Siemens is currently deploying the private network technology for an industrial-focused 5G campus network in one of the exhibition halls of Deutsche Messe AG in Hanover. This private 5G network will be ready for use in early September. The network can be used by exhibitors during trade fairs and, outside of fair hours, can be used by companies to conduct field tests and trials.
