Nokia has deployed a standalone 5G private wireless network for Volkswagen at the automaker's main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. The campus-wide private network uses the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) solution to provide reliable, secure, and real-time connectivity, enabling Volkswagen to test new smart factory use cases.

The industrial-grade 5G private wireless network covers the production development center and pilot hall at the Wolfsburg plant. With this pilot project, Volkswagen will test whether 5G technology meets the demanding requirements of vehicle production, aiming to increase efficiency and flexibility in future series production.

5G is a suite of enhanced and updated mobile communication technologies, along with new features resulting from the addition of two new high-frequency bands: sub-6 GHz (3.5–7 GHz) and mmWave (>24 GHz). The low-frequency band has a greater propagation range but restricted bandwidth and high latency, while the high-frequency band has the opposite characteristics: a short propagation range but enormous bandwidth and ultra-low latency.
