The QCA8829 is the first chip of its kind, which will help advance the development of fiber optic technology to the home by supporting multiple standards, including those of cable operators in North America, PON smart grids in China, and EPON infrastructures in markets around the world.
The standards this chip solution supports include the North American Cable Services Interface Specification (DOCSIS®), the DPoE 1.0 standard, the IEEE 802.3ah EPON specification, the EPON Power Grid Specification for China, and the EPON specification for China Telecom (CTC). The chip solution is specifically tailored to meet the evolving needs of telecom providers, cable operators, and utility companies.

“The QCA8829 is a significant step forward for Qualcomm Atheros, delivering revolutionary access technology,” said Dr. Zheng Liu, vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Atheros’s access business unit. “Qualcomm Atheros provides a simplified system design, offering low power consumption and low cost, as well as better performance than similar devices. Combining these attributes with support for four leading industry standards will help our customers quickly and affordably develop PON products to support access services worldwide.”.

Qualcomm Atheros' high-performance technologies meet the growing demand for broadband to distribute multimedia and television content via Internet Protocol (IPTV) to homes and businesses. With Gigabit-speed EPON solutions, service providers can deliver next-generation fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband access using Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) for network interconnection from the central office, and a high-performance Optical Network Unit (ONU) on a single integrated circuit for deployment in home and business gateways.

The QCA8829 brings simplicity and low system cost to new applications. With power consumption of less than 200 mW in Gigabit Ethernet powerline applications with PHY standby enabled and less than 600 mW when operating at full 1 Gbps with Ethernet PHY enabled, customers can create new low-power designs and deliver improved performance. The 76-pin connector size accommodates a small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical module, simplifying system design for plug-and-play connectivity with an Ethernet switch or IP router. By reducing device costs and increasing network performance, Qualcomm Atheros helps customers lower investment and operating expenses.
Samples and prototypes of the QCA8829 are available now. Full-scale orders will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011.
