Traditional 5 Mbps optical networks are no longer fast enough for substation automation and smart grid applications. The increasing need to connect more control data and equipment within the network requires components with higher bandwidth to ensure reliability and security. Therefore, equipment manufacturers are looking towards 50 Mbps links, but existing solutions require a large number of external components. This new receiver offers the desired 50 Mbps link speed while integrating the functions of an external receiver IC into the fiber optic receiver, thus eliminating the need for an external IC and 18 discrete components.

 The AFBR-24x9xZ has been designed to provide cost-effective, high-performance fiber optic communication links with industry-leading electromagnetic interference (EMI) resistance, utilizing state-of-the-art technology that features an integrated photodiode with a digitization IC on the same silicon chip. The fiber optic receiver is designed to work with HFBR-14xxZ and HFBR-1712TZ fiber optic transmitters with link distances up to 3 km over multimode glass fiber cable. The AFBR-24x9xZ is directly compatible with both industry-standard ST and SMA connectors and operates at transmission speeds from 100 kBd to 50 MBd. With this operating frequency range, this product can be used to implement a proprietary fiber optic transmission system up to 50 MBd and 10Base-FL.

 The AFBR-24x9xZ simplifies the systems engineer's work by integrating the photodiode and digitization IC. This is because it saves over 75% of the components used in a similar application and provides excellent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance. It also consumes less than 20% of the total power dissipation compared to existing solutions on the market for 10Base-FL applications. The AFBR-24x9xZ is equipped with RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication), a feature that indicates the signal strength of the incoming optical signal for diagnostic purposes.
