SOFIA2, Indra's Internet of Things (IoT) and big data solution, has been selected as a platform for building solutions and services in the field of smart cities within the European R&D project Smart Cyber ​​Physical Systems (CPS) Engineering Labs, whose aim is to create a collaborative network of expert engineering centers for the development of cyber-physical systems in different areas.

The project falls under the European Union's Horizon 2020 framework program for research, development, and innovation funding, and aims to facilitate the experimentation of products and services and accelerate technology transfer to European industry to boost its competitiveness. Led by Fortiss, as consortium coordinator, it involves five member countries, which will host expert centers: Germany, France, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Spain.

The activities in the first three countries will focus on the automotive sector, while the UK will work in the area of ​​urban sustainability. Meanwhile, the center in Spain, which will be located at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), will become the smart city laboratory for Europe.
