Optimus has embarked on an ambitious upgrade of its mobile network to better meet the challenges of mobile broadband, which is expected to grow considerably in the coming years. To this end, in early 2010, Optimus selected Huawei's Single RAN technology to modernize its GSM network in Portugal, enabling a rapid LTE rollout in the future. Under the contract, Huawei's mobile base stations will be installed in 33 regions. To date, Huawei has deployed more than 1,000 Single RAN sites for Optimus.

Huawei's Single RAN solution and multi-mode base stations will allow Optimus to meet both the immediate and future needs of users after the GSM network upgrade. The new GSM/EDGE network provides a significant improvement in terms of performance and total cost of ownership, while also facilitating a smooth migration to LTE. This technology leverages existing site resources and reduces network deployment, upgrade, operation, and maintenance costs.
