All companies operating in Europe that supply products and services related to FTTH networks are eligible, and each company joining the initiative can appoint up to three representatives per organization. They can confidentially report their annual carbon intensity (kg CO2 per household) to the Sector Database using the Carbon Intensity tool. In return, they will initially gain access to the Sector Database, which provides accurate carbon intensity values for most products and services across the FTTH value chain.
The Council notes that, beyond a social issue, reducing the environmental impact of the sector's activities on the planet is becoming a competitive one. Assessing the carbon emissions on which a company depends not only allows it to anticipate risks to its operations but also to differentiate itself and thus maintain or grow its business. Customers and investors are likely already asking companies to report on their carbon footprint or that of their products. The European Union has just made carbon reporting (CSRD) mandatory for large organizations from 2024 and will extend it to all SMEs in 2026, so the organization must be prepared in time.
