One of the first members of the consortium, Interoute, has simultaneously activated its transmission systems at the same location and is ready to receive connectivity requests. Fastweb and Retelit are awaiting the activation of their infrastructure solutions as other consortium members join.
Located within Italtel's research facility in Carini (Palermo), the 1,000-square-meter OHM data center is designed with state-of-the-art technology, guaranteeing service continuity, internal infrastructure scalability, and reliable power supply. Thanks to the modularity of its pre-wired fiber optic cabling and electrical systems, the data center offers clients the ease and cost-effective option of installing their equipment in racks or utilizing those supplied by OHM.
Currently, the hub is the first neutral, independent operator location in the Southern Mediterranean to host technological equipment from operators, OTTs, companies and public administration, and was created by the founding members of the consortium: Eolo, Equinix Italia, Fastweb, In-Site, Interoute, Italtel, MIX (Milan Internet Exchange), Retelit, SUPERNAP Italia, VueTel Italia and XMED.
Valeria Rossi, president of Open Hub Med, commented: “This is another step forward in the creation of a project by the most innovative and ambitious companies in our country. The OHM consortium now includes some of the most renowned and distinguished names in the Italian networking world. OHM has been able to achieve this goal thanks to everyone's contribution in terms of experience, vision, and capabilities. In other words, a true consortium strategy has been created with the activation of the data center in Carini, the neutral core of the Hub, the first phase of which has been completed with the addition of the main ground station infrastructure. The aim is to become the aggregation and development center for traffic from the Mediterranean, both south and east.”.
Rossi continues: “The activation of the data center is a fundamental step forward. Today, we are ready to welcome users to the OHM network terminals, including CDNs, content providers, cloud providers, digital media providers, and all those who would benefit from having infrastructure available in this strategic location, both nationally and internationally.”.
