The FTTH Council Europe participated as an observer in the process that led to the creation of the 5G Manifesto and welcomes the recognition given to fiber and the need to invest in fiber networks to achieve 5G in Europe.
The FTTH Council Europe has always viewed Europe's telecom infrastructure as an ecosystem in which no single component can be judged in isolation. Fiber is the cornerstone of that ecosystem, upon which all other aspects depend. 5G fiber backhaul deployments are required if the benefits of 5G investments are to be realized in industry and society. Given the smaller cell sizes associated with 5G networks, especially in urban areas, it will be necessary to accelerate the pace of fiber investments.
The published 5G Manifesto recognizes the need for wider fiber network deployments, along with the need to create appropriate incentives to achieve those fiber investments.
