These projects will offer Artificial Intelligence (AI), B2B, and Telco Cloud services to the residential, business, and public sectors, reinforcing Spain's position as a leader in advanced digital infrastructure in Europe.
Telefónica's new Edge node project will enable AI training and inference at the edge, as well as boost essential digital services in healthcare, education, industry, and public administration, underscoring the company's commitment to data sovereignty and technological innovation. Nokia will provide connectivity for the computing and storage systems within the Edge nodes, as well as connecting these nodes to external networks.
Under a multi-year agreement, Nokia will assume sole responsibility for deploying network solutions for 17 Edge nodes, 12 of which have already been implemented, including Telefónica's flagship Tecno-Alcalá center, one of the world's largest data centers.
The deployment follows the success of an initial pilot implementation of three Edge data centers in 2024, solidifying Nokia as the exclusive network technology partner for Telefónica's expanding Edge network. This single-vendor model will simplify operations, unify the architecture, and increase project efficiency.
“This initiative is fully aligned with our strategy to make Edge Cloud and Artificial Intelligence fundamental pillars of Telefónica’s growth. Nokia has proven to be a trusted connectivity partner in this mission and plays a key role in building secure and reliable data center networks for our ambitious Edge node project. With this effort, we are not only strengthening our digital infrastructure, but also Spain’s technological sovereignty and a more dynamic, user-centric digital ecosystem ,” said Sergio Sánchez, CTIO of Telefónica Spain.
“We are proud to collaborate with Telefónica on this landmark project that drives the transition to a distributed Edge architecture nationwide. This agreement reinforces our long-term strategic relationship and Nokia’s leadership in AI-ready, high-performance data center networking solutions. Together, we are laying the foundations for Spain’s digital future, bringing intelligence and services to where people and businesses need them most ,” said David Heard, President of Network Infrastructure at Nokia.
Connectivity within Edge data centers will be provided by Nokia's 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR) switches and 7750 Service Router (SR) gateways, enabling advanced automation, multicloud integration, and agile adaptation to new digital demands.
