Specifically, URSP's capabilities allow a smartphone to connect to multiple network slices simultaneously through different enterprise and consumer applications based on a subscriber's specific requirements.

The trial, which took place at Nokia's network slicing development center in Tampere, Finland, also included the interoperability functionality of LTE-5G New Radio slicing. This will allow operators to make the most of existing network assets, such as spectrum and coverage.

URSP's capabilities extend network segmentation to new types of applications and use cases, enabling network segments to be tailored based on network performance, traffic routing, latency, and security. For example, an enterprise customer could send sensitive business information using one secure, high-performance network segment while simultaneously participating in a video call using another segment. Additionally, consumers could receive customized network segmentation services, for example, for cloud gaming or high-quality video streaming. The URSP-based network segmentation solution also supports Nokia's new 5G radio resource allocation mechanisms, as well as seamless segmentation capabilities across 4G and 5G networks.

The test was conducted using Nokia's end-to-end 4G/5G network slicing portfolio across RAN-transport-core, as well as related control and management systems. The test included the selection of 5G network slices and connectivity based on enterprise and consumer application categories, as well as 5G NR-LTE slice interoperability capabilities.
