IP cameras, or Wi-Fi cameras, have long been widespread among consumers who want to increase the security of their homes or small businesses by using an app to view the camera's live stream from anywhere, either via Wi-Fi or 4G/5G data. However, since it's not practical to constantly check the app, D-Link's mydlink cameras pioneered the use of push notifications with photos, triggered by the cameras' integrated motion/sound and/or people sensors. These alerts also activate 24-hour recurring cloud video recording, included in the free, unlimited cloud plan offered by D-Link with all its mydlink cameras. Users who receive a push notification can access the app to view the video and download it to their mobile device's local storage for permanent storage. The major advantage of cloud recording over traditional local recordings (on SD cards or NVR/NAS storage) is that, in the event of a theft, the recording of the crime is preserved without risk of destruction, making it possible to provide evidence to the authorities.
During camera installation, always done through the app, the final step asks the user whether or not they wish to activate the free cloud recording service for that camera. Among the platform's usage statistics (presented in more detail in the infographic accompanying this press release), the following stand out:
• 12.5 million clips are uploaded to mydlink servers worldwide every day. D-Link announced a few months ago that its platform has received the prestigious TRUSTe security certification
. • Mydlink users in 204 countries have cloud recording enabled.
• Nearly 4 million of the more than 7 million mydlink platform users have an active cloud recording plan, either the free one included by default or one of the available paid plans (which eliminate the recurring 24-hour time limit, offering more storage days and storage for more cameras within the same account).
• Among accounts registered in Europe, the average user uploads 140 clips per week to mydlink cloud servers.
